The true gift was not what we gave, but what we received: the grace of encountering Jesus everywhere.
Thank you, Jesus. We saw You.

Jun & Ma-an

Our recent Whitewater NCC-led mission to Batam on 29 May – 1 June 2026 was more than just a journey of service — it was a journey of discovery. Together with other CDM parishioners, there were a total  of 26 missionaries. As we sang songs with children, played games, and handed out toys, food, and essentials to the villagers, we witnessed joy radiating from faces that reminded us of God’s presence. Preparing meals in the soup kitchen and sharing them with those in need was not simply an act of charity; it was a living expression of Christ’s love in action.

The travels to the villages and places were already eventful.  We had to take long bus rides to reach the villages and once we had to take a small boat to reach a distant island.  We had to carry loads of bags filled with food, clothes and essentials and at one point even a large ice cream container.  Some of us also had to be instant medical assistants for a health and dental mission with local medical professionals and students who joined us.  While the trip overall was physically demanding, it kept our hearts full and our souls completely nourished.  It also helped that each day we were energized by a Holy Mass, the Rosary, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and meaningful group reflection sessions.

What struck us most and as reminded by Father Francis Telaumbanua (our accompanying local priest) during one of his homilies was the realization that we were not there to bring Jesus to the villages we visited. Instead, we were there to see Jesus already alive in them — in the laughter of children, in the gratitude of families, and in the resilience of communities facing hardship. This mission reminded us that Christ dwells in every heart, and our calling is to recognize Him in others.

Equally beautiful was how this mission strengthened the bonds within our own Whitewater NCC and meeting new friends. Serving side by side, we grew closer to one another, united by shared purpose and joy.   We looked after each other especially to those in need within our own group.  The mission became a mirror: as we saw Jesus in those we served, we also saw Him in each other.  Not really an NCC anymore but now a family.

The true gift of this mission though was not so much what we gave, but what we received — the grace of encountering Jesus in unexpected places. It taught us that service is not about delivering God’s love as if it were absent, but about opening our eyes to where His love is already at work.

In Batam, we discovered that God’s love is most visible when we step into the lives of others with humility, joy, and compassion. And in doing so, we were transformed ourselves.

Thank you Jesus!  We saw you.

Faith in Action, Love in Service

“But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or in speech but in deed and in truth. By this we shall know that we are of the truth, and reassure our hearts before Him”

1 John 3:18
